The Chain-Smoking Occult Con Man Is Headed Back to the Big Screen, and the Next Evil Dead Filmmaker Is Holding the Pen
DC’s resident magician and grifter is getting another shot at the movies. DC Studios has brought on Francis Galluppi to write a feature built around John Constantine, and Deadline broke the news Wednesday evening. The project is said to be in its earliest stages, with no director, cast or other names attached so far, and DC itself isn’t commenting.
The hire lands while Galluppi is in the middle of his own big leap. He wrote and is directing Evil Dead Wrath, the seventh entry in Sam Raimi’s deadite franchise and his first studio picture, built from an original story he pitched to Raimi and his team in 2024. Warner Bros. has it set for April 7, 2028. Galluppi first got noticed for his crime thriller The Last Stop in Yuma County, which drew strong notices out of Fantastic Fest before Well Go USA released it.
Constantine first turned up in The Saga of the Swamp Thing #37 back in 1985, created by Alan Moore with artists Steve Bissette and John Totleben, and went on to anchor the long-running Hellblazer series. Keanu Reeves played a Los Angeles take on the character in Francis Lawrence’s 2005 film Constantine, a sequel fans have been waiting on for years, while Matt Ryan wore the trench coat for a single season on NBC starting in 2014.
