The two sides of Roger Corman are represented with The Terror (1963) and The Little Shop of Horrors (1960). Corman’s Gothic, spooky side is on display in The Terror, an atmospheric horror tale of a French soldier whose encounter with a ghostly woman leads him to a mysterious castle full of dark secrets. The pairing of a youthful Jack Nicholson as the soldier and veteran Boris Karloff as the castle’s owner make The Terror a memorable example of Corman’s mid-sixties Goth period. Though Corman is credited as director, several others took a turn behind the camera, including Nicholson himself, Monte Hellman, and Francis Ford Coppola. Meanwhile,Corman’s more whimsical side is on display in The Little Shop of Horrors. This legendary cult film features a bumbling florist’s assistant who creates a giant plant that happens to crave human blood. The usual Corman stock company is on hand, including Jonathan Haze and Dick Miller, plus a cameo by Nicholson as a dental patient with a high threshold for pain.

Tormented is an American horror film starring Richard Carlson. Jazz pianist Tom Stewart (Richard Carlson) lives in a Cape Cod island community, and is preparing to marry his fiancée Meg Hubbard (Lugene Sanders). Shortly before the wedding, Tom’s ex-girlfriend VI Mason (Juli Reding) visits and informs him that she will end his relationship with Meg using blackmail if necessary. They argue atop a lighthouse and the railing gives way. VI cries to Tom for help, but he ignores her and VI falls to her death. All sorts of strange events begin to take place putting a halt to Tom’s wedding, including the church’s doors bursting open, flowers wilting, and all the candles go out. The ending is a supernatural plethora of events which one would have never seen coming. This is a superb horror and a definite sign for those who believe in the afterlife and haunting from beyond the grave.

Looking to inject a little more excitement into his life, family man Larry seizes the opportunity when he happens across a newspaper advert for a “unique and exotic” room for rent in a mansion in the Hollywood Hills. The room, draped in black sheets and filled with candles, pillows and mirrors, seems to be the ideal place in which to carry out his extra-marital affairs – which Larry promptly does, first picking up a young college girl and later a prostitute. The mysterious owners of the property, siblings Jason and Bridget, seem more than happy to accommodate the wayward husband, dutifully preparing the room for each visit. But what Larry doesn’t realize is that Jason is deathly in need of regular blood transfusions, and the pair have been abducting each of Larry’s carnal conquests to use as victims in Jason’s deadly laboratory…

Written and co-directed by Norman Thaddeus Vane (writer/director of 1983’s Frightmare) and directed by Elly Kenner, 1982’s The Black Room is a smart, seductive, and utterly unique horror yarn, offering up a distinctive and modern take on the then-tired vampire mythos, whilst doubling down on all the requisite sex and bloodletting one would expect from the genre – the latter aided in no small part by the talents of special effects guru Mark Shostrom (Evil Dead II, the A Nightmare on Elm Street series). Featuring cinematography from Robert Harmon (who’d go on to helm the 1986 cult classic The Hitcher), Vinegar Syndrome is thrilled to resurrect The Black Room from its murky VHS grave, pumping fresh blood into this underseen horror gem with a new 4K restoration from 35mm negative elements and an unholy assortment of newly-produced bonus features.
