She bought a stranger’s SEMEN to stage a murder scene. Then investigators discovered the Cleopatra wig, the life insurance policies and a plot worth over €1 MILLION. And somehow, María Ángeles Molina thought she was going to get away with ALL of it.
When 36-year-old Ana María Páez was discovered dead inside an apartment in Barcelona, Spain, in February 2008, investigators initially faced what appeared to be a deeply disturbing and unusual crime scene. But as police began piecing together Ana’s final movements, they uncovered something far more calculated than anyone could have imagined.
At the centre of the investigation was María Ángeles Molina, better known as Angie, a former colleague and friend of Ana’s who had spent years constructing an elaborate financial deception. Using Ana’s identity, Angie had taken out multiple life insurance policies worth over €1 million, setting the stage for a murder plot that would eventually become one of Spain’s most bizarre true crime cases.
And when detectives started digging, things got WEIRD. A jet-black Cleopatra-style wig. A bottle of chloroform. Suspicious documents hidden inside a toilet cistern. A carefully constructed alibi involving a trip to Zaragoza. And, perhaps most disturbingly, semen purchased from a stranger in an attempt to manipulate the evidence found at the crime scene.
Every new discovery exposed another layer of Angie’s plan, while her explanations to investigators became increasingly unbelievable.
In today’s true crime and makeup episode, we’re diving into the shocking murder of Ana María Páez, the investigation that unravelled María Ángeles Molina’s deception, the forensic evidence that helped expose her, and the extraordinary courtroom revelations that ultimately led to a 22-year prison sentence.
Because apparently, planning an elaborate murder, staging a crime scene and attempting to collect a fortune in life insurance wasn’t enough. Angie also had to provide investigators with some of the most ridiculous explanations you’ll ever hear.
