He offered to help her get to the train station. Instead, he led her into the woods, where she would be found dead two days later.
On August 15, 2012, 20-year-old Japanese university student Yurika Masuno arrived at Bucharest’s Henri Coandă International Airport in Romania. She was supposed to travel to Craiova for a teaching placement, but she was alone in an unfamiliar country and anxious about the journey. When a man approached her in the arrivals hall and offered assistance, she accepted. Airport surveillance footage captured them leaving together and getting into a taxi.
But the taxi never headed toward the train station. Instead, it traveled in the opposite direction, toward a stretch of forest outside Bucharest. What investigators would eventually uncover was far more disturbing than a chance encounter with a violent stranger.
Join Megan as she retraces Yurika’s final journey, investigates her encounter with Nicolae Vlad and examines the shocking criminal history that emerged following her murder.
How many opportunities did authorities have to stop this man before Yurika ever set foot in Romania?
