The Smile Star Signs On as the Skeptic Whose Science Can’t Explain What the Tapes Reveal
MGM+ has found the second lead for its podcast-based horror drama, with Sosie Bacon cast opposite Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in The Black Tapes, as first reported by Deadline. Bacon, who broke out in the horror world with Smile, comes aboard as Alex Regan, the show’s female co-lead.
The eight-episode series adapts the 2015 paranormal podcast from Terry Miles and Paul Bae. Coster-Waldau plays Dr. Richard Strand, a psychiatrist with a hidden history, while Bacon’s Regan is a precise, data-driven physicist who signs on to help disprove the infamous black tapes: unsolved cases of hauntings, possessions, vanishings and dark legends. Her training is supposed to make her the ultimate debunker, but the deeper the pair dig, the harder it becomes to deny that something beyond nature is at work, and the trail leads to a concealed occult world and an apocalyptic conspiracy centuries in the making.
Miles and Bae are writing the adaptation and executive producing alongside Kearie Peak of Peak Pictures and John Rogers and Jennifer Court of Kung Fu Monkey Productions, with Rogers running the show for MGM+ Studios. Cameras are set to roll in Vancouver in January 2027, and the series will stream on MGM+ in the U.S., UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Latin America.
Horror fans will also see Bacon in Family Movie, a horror-comedy directed by and co-starring her parents, Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon. After premiering at SXSW, it is headed to release through Variance Films on April 23, 2027. She recently finished shooting the second season of Prime Video’s Scarpetta, returning as Abby Turnbull.
