The Shutter Filmmaker’s Ageless Grandmother Isn’t Done With Her Family Yet
Thai horror’s centipede-possessed matriarch is coming back for more. Banjong Pisanthanakun, the director behind Shutter and Pee Mak, confirmed in a conversation with Variety that his new psychological horror film is getting a second chapter, and that star Davika Hoorne will return for it.
Hoorne plays Woranart, a grandmother who looks decades younger than she should and settles into her granddaughter’s wealthy household. It doesn’t take long for the family to realize something ancient is living inside her — a centuries-old centipede spirit with designs on the youngest child, Oui, played by Baipor Thitiya Jirapornsilp. The pairing reunites Pisanthanakun with Hoorne for the first time since Pee Mak, the 2013 horror-comedy that still stands as Thailand’s highest-grossing local release.
The film had its world premiere as a Centrepiece selection at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and is now serving as the closing-night title at Jakarta World Cinema. GDH opens it in Thai cinemas on November 19. No timing, plot details, or additional cast have been revealed for the follow-up.
Pisanthanakun, who also directed The Medium with producer Na Hong-jin, said he wanted Woranart to feel thoroughly modern — glamorous, funny, and unnerving at once — and pointed Hoorne toward Sharon Stone’s Catherine Tramell and Anthony Hopkins’ Hannibal Lecter while shooting. He credited recent genre hits for pulling him back to horror after a stretch of burnout: “I think it’s the only genre that still has something creative coming up.”
