Tanabe’s Lovecraft Series Heads to Providence for Its Next Descent
Gou Tanabe’s ongoing run of H.P. Lovecraft manga adaptations has its next target. Dark Horse will release the first volume of his take on The Case of Charles Dexter Ward on March 30, 2027, and Screen Rant spotted the announcement along with the cover. Zack Davisson handles the English translation.
Lovecraft wrote the novella in 1927, but it didn’t see print until 1941, years after his death. The story follows a young Providence antiquarian in the Jazz Age whose fascination with his city’s colonial past narrows into an obsession with his ancestor Joseph Curwen, a pre-Revolution merchant whispered to have dabbled in alchemy and the occult and who seemed never to age. As Charles digs for Curwen’s lost grave and the secrets buried with him, his behavior turns stranger until he lands in an asylum, leaving family doctor Dr. Willett to chase down the horrifying truth.
Tanabe, who writes and illustrates the series, has built a strong following in the West with his black-and-white Lovecraft adaptations, and this new entry is billed as the opening volume of a multi-part telling. Dark Horse lists it at 178 pages in a 16+ trade paperback, with a tip-in title page printed in metallic ink.
