This two-disc set features all six episodes of the classic fantasy-horror mini-series. A young girl is stuck in her home due to an illness. To pass the time she draws pictures that, amazingly, come to life in her dreams. She draws a house, which then appears in her dreams. Then she draws a boy in the upper window, who also appears in her dreams. In short, she can influence her dreams by changing her drawings; but when she draws a number of boulders around the house, her dreams become nightmares, filled with one-eyed rock monsters that slowly creep toward her house. Even worse, she is unable to erase them from her drawings when she is awake! A great mini-series; taken from a story by Catherine Storr.

But ten years and two sons later, Piccoli still yearns for his dead first wife. He’s eventually shown a way (at heavy cost) to bring her back from the dead. It’s a big mistake, though, as LIV begins stalking the countryside, looking for little kids to murder! All this happens while the black plague is decimating the countryside. Cool ending, but this is one of those, is the monster really dead? kind of movies. A fine Euro horror effort. Great color, 35mm

This is a great movie. Boone plays the unwilling manager of a local graveyard. The cemetery map has white pins inserted on vacant plots, and black pins inserted on occupied graves. What you’ve got here is a pretty well-made Euro horror comedy. Yes, there are plenty of laughs in this film, but they are blended in with many scary moments, all of which are enhanced by the film’s chillingly gothic B&W photography. The setting is a school for wayward girls. One of the professors who’s a bit beastly in appearance, has discovered a method of transferring his personality into the body of another. His first guinea pig is a handsome young professor, who then sets his sites on the beautiful young girls at the school, including the gorgeous Helene Chanel. An eccentric detective is eventually brought in to get to the bottom of things. Good fun.

Bela went abroad for this wacky British horror comedy and it was the last time he was seen on screen in his Dracula cape. There’s a bit of an espionage plot, which results in the kidnapping of Mercedes at the film’s beginning. However, the real star of the show here isn’t Lucan as Mother Riley, but Lugosi as a maniac who thinks he’s a vampire and wants to bring the world to it’s knees. He even has a massive robot as his command. Bela brings to his part an intensity that hadn’t been seen since his performances of the early ’30s. Worth it for him alone. This was released in the States years later as My Son the Vampire.

Spells Available July 11

#horror – #horrormovies – #Spells – #SinisterCinema – @sinistercinema –

With every batch of new releases there’s always a film or two that we absolutely rave about. Spells is one of those films. The IMDB description fits it perfectly, listing it as a horror-crime-drama. Spells is full of latent and overt horror elements, featuring a black devil horse that terrorizes mountain villagers, seemingly seeking revenge for it’s murdered owner. Watch for the gnarled, frozen hand of the victim protruding through the snow. There’s also Lucien Coedel as the dark arts wizard who dabbles in magic spells, animal sacrifices, voodoo, and murder. Coedel is brilliant as he uses his dark powers to possess the woman he loves. Faure is amazingly appealing and almost angelic in her beauty as his intended victim. The climactic confrontation scene between her and Coedel is outstanding. Robinson and Pigaut are wonderful as the star-crossed lovers whose engagement is doomed by jealously and wavering hearts. But watch for Fernand Ledoux, who almost steals the show as Faure’s bewitched, crazy father. The acting in this film is superb, with many great moments, all of which are augmented by a top-of-the-line music score and a brilliant script. As if all this isn’t enough, the B&W cinematography is to die for. The setting, a snow-covered mountain village, is photographed in a way that leaves the viewer feeling as though they’ve visited a dreamlike, otherworldly place. We can’t recommend this film enough. Wow. Subtitled in English.

Small poison gas balls mean certain death in this well-made, stylish Krimi Euro-thriller. These pellets of death are used by a mad genius to gain revenge against his adversaries. Although not officially an Edgar Wallace film, Carpet of Horror looks every bit the part with Wallace regulars Berger and Dor playing the same kind of roles they played over at Rialto Films-home of the German Edgar Wallace films. Distributed by the same distributor as Rialto, Constantin Films. Also similar in flavor to the Dr. Mabuse films of the same period. The film was directed by Harald Reinl, another Rialto-Wallace regular. Dor is her usual stunningly beautiful self as she portrays the niece of one of the killer’s victims. Great opening sequence as the killer strikes his first victim; watch for the cool scene with an exploding sports car.

This is an amazing mad scientist film laced with espionage and intrigue. Garin is a mad inventor who has created (with stolen plans) an apparatus called the Hyperboloid. It is a death ray of unparalleled destructive power. He is bound and determined to hold supreme power over Earth and commits atrocity after atrocity, with little regard for the consequences of his actions or the effect they might have on mankind. He is of course bewitched by a beautiful woman, who helps speed him along on his course to self-destruction. The scenes of death ray carnage are astonishing. Watch as Garin blows a war fleet of battleships out of the water. Wow. The film features beautiful black and white cinematography the use of light and shadow is excellent! The many rogue-ish characters are masterfully portrayed by an assortment of soviet thespians.
