Just to clear things up a bit right off the bat: By Night’s End is not a horror film. This isn’t a negative because it was actually a pretty good movie. That being said, this is a pretty straightforward home invasion thriller. Don’t expect there to be any supernatural boogeymen, vampires, zombies or a tremendous amount of gore. Instead, go into this movie expecting a stylish nail biter.

“Romantic horror.” There, I said it. I know that when I personally think of the concept of romantic horror, aside from a few exceptions images conjure in my brain of leather-clad vampires a-la early 90s era Cinemax. Maybe it’s a very close-minded point of view (and I can readily admit that it is) but I have never been able to really wrap my mind around something heartfelt also being overtly gory.

The Tell Tale Heart starts with the poem of Longfellow, which we all can appreciate pertaining to this infamous story. Much appreciated is the retro-yet-recent feel of the movie. It is something to behold. We follow the caretakers journey in this short film caring for an old man, murder, and a descent into complete madness. Everything one could love about one of Poe’s infamous thrillers, really.

When I first heard about Inoperable and saw the trailer, I was honestly looking forward to seeing it.  It sounded and looked interesting.  The concept seemed new and fresh.  It also didn’t hurt that lifelong scream queen Danielle Harris was in the starring role. Unfortunately, all of these elements combined still resulted in a film that is slightly above mediocre. That’s not to say it was completely unwatchable; it just wasn’t the movie I had psyched myself up for.
